Birding Sites in Goa
Carambolin Lake
An excellent site that was only a short
taxi ride away was Carambolin Lake and nearby the Ciba Giegy factory,
where they have constructed an area of wetland to show how safe
their effluent is!

Geigy wetland site
This site was one of the best to see
Open-Bill Storks and Lesser Adjutants.
While at Carambolin Lake there were
Pheasant-Tailed Jacana, Bronze-Winged Jacana, Purple Swamphen,
Lesser Whistling-Duck, Cotton-Pygmy Goose plus Darter, Herons
and Egrets.
Sadly access to Ciba Giegy has
been withdrawn, you can only peer through the fence.

There are many sites just a taxi drive away offering excellent
birding. While some of the 'organised' trips prove to be good
for birds as well. With the crocodile trip and spice plantation
offering the best opportunities. We saw excellent birds on both
trips and had a very enjoyable time.

Morji Beach
A rather beautiful and fairly deserted
beach north of Baga is Morji Beach, this may alter as a bridge
is currently being constructed which will improve access. Here
you can enjoy some wonderful birding with superb scenery and the
excellent beach. There are beach huts where you can get cold drinks
and food. Try to arrange your visit to coincided with the high
tide which will push the birds closer,
Morji Beach
On our visits to Morji Beach we saw
Palla's Gull, Brown-Headed Gull, Black-Headed Gull, Great-Crested
Tern, Lesser-Crested Tern, Common Tern, Sandwich Tern, Gull-Billed
Tern, two varieties of Yellow-Legged Gulls, Lesser-Sand Plover,
Kentish Plover, Small Pratincole, White-Bellied Sea Eagle, and
Tawny Pipit.
Baga / Arpora Woods
An excellent forest site this, get
a taxi to Club Cubana walk up the entrance track pass the club
and continue straight on. We found it best to continue on the
main track exploring the side tracks as we went. Some superb birds
to be found here, we had an excellent Indian Cuckoo on one visit.
Baga / Arpora Woods
Arambol
Walk down the beach at Arambol then
turn right, walk past the rocks, or climb over them if tide is
in, to eventually reach the freshwater pool by the shore. A fairly
longish walk but well worth the effort.
Arambol Beach
Baga Hill
This is best reached by going over
the Baga river then turing right, on the other side of the concrete
bridge, following the road until you are opposite where the river
does a 90 degree turn to the right. On your left you should see
a track that leads up the hlll, follow this up and when you reach
the point where the track divides take the left hand track. Birding
is good all the way up this track sometimes the area nearest the
road can be very productive. You will emerge on the ridge and
can explore the area to the left and right, early morning or late
afternoon seemed quite good. On one trip we sat on the ridge looking
north and watched a Oriental Honey Buzzard for ages as it flew
around below us.
